How to draw an octagon

The look of an octagonal box depends above all on its layout which must be regular if we want the lid to fit perfectly. Here are two techniques:

The first one requires a ruler and a compass:

Draw a square

Draw a horizontal and a vertical line through the middle of the four sides.

Draw the diagonals.

Draw a circle from the center, where all the lines intersect

Draw the sides of the octagon by joining the intersections of the circle with the different lines.

The second one is more complicated, but it can be useful when you don't have any compass at hand:

Draw a line AB of the desired length, then a perpendicular CD, of the same length, which passes through the center O.
Make a line between A and C, the center of which is E.

Draw a line OF passing through E and of the same length as OA.

Repeat the previous step for the other three sides.

Put all the vertices together to make an octagon.
