The direction of  paper fibers

Only papers made mechanically, such as Italians or leather imitations for example, have a direction.

The folds are sharper and less fragile in the direction of the fibers, so before gluing the paper around your box or when making the cover of a notebook, do these little tests:

  • Cut a more or less square piece of paper, bend it back and forth to feel which one offers the least resistance.

The fold that is done more easily is in the direction of the fibers.

  • The water test: With a brush dipped in water, draw a line along two perpendicular edges of your piece of paper. One of the sides will warp: it is the fibers opposite direction also called the direction of elongation.

The direction of elongation is perpendicular to the direction of the fibers.
